Homemade Heating Pads!

So, I know that I am not the only one that has noticed that it is officially WINTER! It is freezing outside, and you know what that means...

body aches and pains! whoo hoo!! These heating pads are great gifts for others, and also for yourself :)

I made mine using Darby's tutorial over at one of my favorite blogs http://www.flythroughourwindow.com/

I made one big heating pad and 2 smaller ones. I am going to put the steps up for the smaller one, but if you want to make a bigger one, the only difference is that you start with a longer piece of fabric.

Here is what you need:

  • 9" x 36" piece of 100% cotton fabric

  • 100% cotton thread that matches your fabric

  • rice (I just used white rice)

  • Tea bags or something that you would like to sprinkle in the bag along with the rice. I used Apple Cider mix!

Okay, lets get started...

Fold your piece of fabric in half with the right sides facing each other. You will then straight stich the 2 long sides leaving about a 1/2 " seam allowance.

This is what mine looked like folded, pinned, and ready to sew.

Once you have stitched the 2 long sides together, you will have 3 sides closed, leaving the end open to stuff your rice in. Turn your bag inside out making the right sides out in the open. Just like this....

Then, mark 4 equal sections on the front. I used a pencil to draw the straight lines. Then, I stitched 3/4 down the way on the lines. Only sew 3/4 of the way down so the rice can get through each section.

Once you have your sections 3/4 of the way sew, get your rice and whatever you chose to add to make it smell nice.

Add the rice/tea in the open end of the bag. Manipulate the rice so that it will fill each chamber, starting with the one that is furthest away. Once each section is full, sew down the rest of the way following the line that you already drew with your pencil. Once you finish each chamber it will look like this...

Once you have filled all of the sections, you will need to sew the end shut. Tuck in the ends and using a straight stitch sew it shut!
Then, roll it up, tie it together, and add a tag with directions!
Microwave for 2 1/2 min and enjoy! Warning: It may be really hot so check it before you put it on your bare skin!!!
